Open Vented Systems
An ‘Open Vented’ system is a heating and hot water system that has tanks (usually in the loft) and a hot water cylinder contained within an airing cupboard. Whilst not necessarily the most efficient arrangement, an open vented boiler replacement is still an option in some cases, and your new boiler would, of course, still be an ‘energy efficient’ (condensing) appliance.

Old boiler in out - house In from the cold
Older boilers were generally open vented and often had ‘gravity fed’ hot water, which had unregulated hot water with no thermostat. This is a very inefficient and wasteful arrangement (often producing scolding hot water) and when upgrading to a new boiler some alterations will need to be made in order that it is ‘fully pumped’, controllable and more efficient. Modern open vented boilers are not compatible with an existing gravity fed hot water system without upgrading the controls, so contact us at Gas Safety Plus and we can advise you on what the best option is for your home.
