Power Flushing
Chemical Power Flushing has in the past been a very under rated, and often neglected, part of boiler installation and heating upgrade work. But not power flushing a heating system prior to installing a new boiler will dramatically reduce its life and reduce its efficiency very rapidly.
All leading manufacturers will refuse to guarantee their products if there is any evidence that the heating system has not been power flushed and if sludge (iron oxide) or scale is the cause of the breakdown. Even British Gas will not cover a system that breaks down due to sludge or scale (it’s in the small print of their 3 star cover plan) and they will sometimes charge over £800 to Chemically Power Flush a defective heating system.
Over the years we have had to replace several ‘new’ (i.e. less than 3 years old) appliances that have been irreparably damaged because the system was not properly cleaned out during the installation process.
When comparing quotes check to see that your installer will carry out a full chemical power flush with a specialised machine. If done properly this process will take the best part of a day but the process will prolong the life of your new boiler as well as improve the efficiency of your heating system.
At Gas Safety Plus all new boiler installations are power flushed and this is included in our quotes.
Symptoms of a heating system in need of a power flush include:
Radiators are hot at the top, but cold at the bottom and patchy
Radiators constantly need bleeding air smells ‘gassy’
Hot water on my combination boiler keeps fluctuating hot and cold
Some or all of the radiators don’t warm up at all
Signs of corrosion and leaks on radiators
